West Bloomfield offers its residents two (2) annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Events during the Spring & Fall of each calendar year. The events allow the community a legal and cost-free way to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals that cannot be collected through regular curbside collection.
In addition to hazardous waste collection, the event includes collections of:
- Electronic waste recycling
- Paper for shredding
- Medical sharps
- Expired medications
In addition, St. Vincent dePaul volunteers will be on-site for a Donation Drive on Saturday. Update: Donation drive cancelled due to pandemic.
- Friday, September 26, 2020 from 1 pm to 7 pm
- Saturday, September 26, 2020 9 am – 2 pm
You must wear a face mask for this year’s event!
You must be a West Bloomfield, Orchard Lake or Sylvan Lake resident (with ID) to participate in this event.
In addition to changing your clocks, we remind you to use these dates to check your smoke detector batteries also. Although many modern detectors have 10-year batteries, it’s a good practice to check them anyhow. After all, smoke detectors can fail for other reasons.

Excerpted from Wikipedia:
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year. King’s actual birthday is January 15.
King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
People are encouraged to reflect on the works of Martin Luther King Jr. and to volunteer their time to help others in need. Some places you can check about volunteer opportunities in this area are: JustServe.org, Oakgov.com, and Lighthouse of Michigan.
There will be no change in trash pickup scheduling this week due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
More info about trash pickup is available on our website.
