Winter driving safety tips
Winter driving safety takes a few tips.
Michigan’s winter weather can be very harsh and unpredictable. And the roads can be unforgiving if you let your guard down even for a moment. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard advises you to always keep the following rule of thumb in mind is “When in doubt, don’t go out”. You’ve heard this advice before but a reminder never hurts. And forgetting can hurt – or even kill!
If you must go out, then:
- Clear your vehicle of snow and ice. This includes all windows, mirrors, and all lights (headlights, taillights, turn lights). You need to see and be seen.
- Clear snow and grime off of your license plate.
- Posted speed limits do not necessarily apply in inclement weather. Figure in extra time to get to your destination and do not rush.
- Leave plenty of space between vehicles.
- Keep a cell phone with you in case of emergency but do not use it while driving.
- Take someone with you and let others know your travel plans before you set out.
- Keep your vehicle in top operating condition. Check your battery, brakes, tires, lights, fuel, climate controls, wiper blades, and washers. Make sure your fuel tank is at least half-full.
- Dress appropriately for changing weather conditions. Wear or keep warm clothes in your car. Boots and blankets are advisable.
- Do not drive distracted. Do not text while driving. Pull safely off the road to make phone calls or text.
- Know your route, especially around our county’s curvy lake roads. Take care to avoid sudden stops or turns, especially when traveling unfamiliar roads. It’s better to miss your turn and backtrack than to slide into a lake or other object. If possible, have someone with you who is familiar with the route.
- Watch for potholes that can present additional winter hazards for Oakland County drivers. Bear in mind that the beneath the puddles that you see in the roads there may be deep potholes that you don’t see. Report any potholes to the Road Commission of Oakland County.
- Even though your car may handle snow and ice safely, be considerate of lighter weight vehicles that may not.
- New drivers should take advantage of supervised practice in an empty parking lot is advised.
- Headlights on for safety – even though it may not be nighttime.
- Always drive defensively! And be patient!
