2023 Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) & Electronics and Shredding Events

Each year West Bloomfield Township holds events in the spring and fall for residents to drop off household hazardous waste, electronics items, and shredding. These events give residents a legal and safe way to dispose of unwanted hazardous materials that are not acceptable for curbside pickup.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • You must be a West Bloomfield, Orchard Lake, Sylvan Lake, or Keego Harbor resident to participate in these events. Please have ID ready to show.
  • Commercial or business waste, electronics, and shredding will NOT be accepted.
  • Check the West Bloomfield Township website for up-to-date information, procedures, and lists of acceptable and non-acceptable hazardous waste/electronics and shredding items.
  • Please mark your calendar and share this information with your neighbors!

Hazardous Waste/Electronics Drop-Off Events:

ACCEPTABLE HHW MATERIALS

Acetone, Adhesives, Aerosols, Ammonia, Antifreeze, Asbestos, Automotive Fluid/Lubricants, Batteries (Alkaline/Auto/Household), Bug Spray, Chemical Cleaners, Corrosives (Acid/Bases), Diesel, Expired Medication (Over-the-Counter), Fire Extinguisher, Floor Care Products, Florescent Tubes, Fungicides, Furniture Polish, Gasoline, Herbicide, Insecticide, Kerosene, Lightbulbs, Lighter Fluid, Medical Sharps (in rigid containers), Mercury, Metallic, Moth Balls, Motor Oil, Muric Acid, Nail Polish, Oil, Oxidizers, Paint & Paint Products, Pesticides, Polishes, Pool/Spa Chemicals, Propane Cylinders, Road Flares, Smoke Detectors, Solvents, Thermometers, Thermostats, Varnish, Wood Preservatives/Stripper

ACCEPTABLE ELECTRONICS ITEMS

Cable Boxes, Cell Phones, Computers, Keyboards, Laptops, Monitors, Mouse, Terminals, DVD/VCRs, Fax machines, Gaming units, Notebooks, Pagers, Phones, Printers, Scanners, Stereos/radios, Televisions, Typewriters

UNACCEPTABLE MATERIALS


Air conditioning units, Ammunition, Appliances, Biologically active material, Broken Glass on otherwise acceptable items, Compost/Yard waste, Construction material/debris, Controlled substances, Cylinders (other than fire extinguishers and propane cylinders which ARE acceptable), Dehumidifiers, Explosives, Foam sealant/insulation, Helium tanks, Industrial/commercial waste, Infectious medical waste – except for medical sharps in rigid containers, Insulation cylinders, Miscellaneous car parts, Plastic shopping bags, Radioactive material, Shock-sensitive material, Standard household trash, Styrofoam, Tires, Water heaters, Weapons, Yard waste/wood


Shredding/Media Destruction Drop-Off Events:

ACCEPTABLE FOR ON-SITE SHREDDING
Paper (colored/copy/computer), carbonless forms, catalogs & magazines, envelopes (window or plain), Junk mail, large prints, laser paper, letterhead, magazines, manila folders, newspaper, phone books, soft cover books, stationery, stickers.
NOTE: Staples & paper clips are acceptable.

ACCEPTABLE FOR MEDIA DESTRUCTION (To be shredded at facility)

CD-ROMS, Data Tapes, Computer Hard Drives, CVD’s, Floppy Disks, Video Tapes

NOTE: All items should be separated by type as they will be taken back to a commercial shredding facility for destruction.


UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS/MATERIALS
Binders, black carbon, bubble wrap, cardboard, cloth, film, foil, hanging file folders, metal items, napkins, plastic, Styrofoam, wax paper, wood.
