US Postal Service app: Convenient, useful

I’ve posted before about the USPS Informed Delivery® service. I’ve been using it for a few months now and I find it to be a useful free service. Every morning I get an email with photo previews of each mail piece I can expect in that day’s mail.

Some of my clients still pay me with checks sent by mail. Before I do my banking I can see if there’s another check arriving today. (Of course, I can’t see the content of the envelope. But by seeing the front of the envelope, I have a pretty good guess about what’s in it. And if, on a rainy day, I see that the daily mail is just pretty much junk, I can wait to fetch it out of my mailbox.

Now, I’ve discovered the USPS Mobile app for my Android phone. (It’s available for iPhone also.) I can just go to the app on my phone and preview today’s mail without going through all my email. With the same app, I can access popular USPS.com® tools: calculate postage and shipping prices, find a Post Office, look up a ZIP Code™, schedule a next-day pickup, request USPS to hold my mail, track packages, buy stamps, and more. I can even find a self-service kiosk or collection box – including scheduled pickup times and directions on a map via my phone’s GPS.

It’s not an app that will change your life but it does add a lot of convenience when needed. After all, standing in line at the post office is never fun. And calling can be a drag if you have to listen to too many voice message prompts only to find you took went down the wrong path and just want to hang up if you can’t to talk to a real human being!
