Have you checked your smoke detector?
No doubt that by now you’ve already sprung your clocks ahead an hour for Daylight Saving Time. But have you checked your smoke detectors? (also known as smoke alarms) Fire safety experts remind us to do that at least twice a year — when DST starts and when it ends. Actually, monthly checks are the official recommendation. Check the batteries and replace them as needed.
Even if you have checked your smoke alarm battery, have you checked the device’s manufacture date?
Your smoke detector should come from the factory with a date of manufacture on it. If it’s been 10 years or more, or if it has not date, REPLACE IT. The newest variety of smoke detectors come with a non-replaceable 10-year battery. Even if you already have this newer type, you should still test them twice a year by pressing the test button. And even if the battery still tests strong, replace the entire device if it’s more than 10 years old.
There are different types of fires and different types of smoke detectors. The United States Fire Authority (USFA) offers advice on the type of smoke detector best for your home. This article also points out the importance of proper placement of your smoke alarm for maximum effectiveness. Follow the links on that page for more information about smoke alarms.
